About Us

Overview

Marine EcoCoatings, Inc. developed SeaShell antifoulant as a direct response to The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union tightening up on the use of environmentally harmful anti-fouling bottom paints. Based in Marina Del Rey, California the company has pulled together a team of scientists and expert mariners to develop a product that is not only good for the environment but good for your wallet too. Whether SeaShell is being used to coat an 9600 teu container vessel or a 14' row boat (yes we have coated one) we strive to ensure that in the long run everyone is getting a better deal, the environment and mariners wallets.

Edson extended his expertise in Marine Surveying into the nondestructive testing field as Level II with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing in 1978.

And, if that wasn't enough, Edson was a technical advisor and consultant for the long running television series McHale's Navy, while performing in 140 episodes as "Virgil".

Dr. Franklin Rivers

Dr. Franklin Rivers began his scientific career as a physician. Graduating from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, he did his post-graduate training during the Viet Nam war in the US military hospital in the Panama Canal Zone. Thereafter, he practiced Medicine for many years, all the while pursuing his lifelong interest in marine environmental research.

He combined his interests by taking his medical expertise aboard his boat as a medical ambassador to several countries in Central America. There, in 1979, he founded a charity clinic at Ambergris Caye, Belize which he supervised for 17 years until a hurricane destroyed the site.

When his efforts proved to be more successful than anyone could have hoped, in 1994 Dr. Rivers took the products of his research into an environmentally benign method of biofouling prevention into reality. His efforts culminated in the development of SeaShell, a truly eco-friendly and incredibly effective means of protecting both boat hulls and the seas they sail in. Based upon his years of experience and research, Dr. Rivers founded Marine EcoCoatings, Inc. in 2009, and now, MEC brings their benefit to our seas.
