What is SeaShell coating?
SeaShell antifoulant is an ecologically safe alternative to the toxic copper-based anti-fouling paints traditionally used on both pleasure craft and commercial vessels.
SeaShell's many beneficial properties are made possible by our proprietary ingredients: a special Cupronickel alloy (CuNi) and a unique marine epoxy. Our CuNi is a virtually inert alloy produced under exacting conditions with very high temperatures and atmospheric pressures in a chamber containing no oxygen or other contaminants. Under these circumstances, our ingredients alloy together to form an entirely new nontoxic metal based on Cupronickel. This is the primary ingredient in SeaShell: the most ECO-FRIENDLY bottom coating in the world.
Through our patent-pending, top secret process our alloy forms a surface that is so glassy-smooth and polished that it dramatically reduces the drag coefficient of a vessel hull moving through water. So, SeaShell reduces the energy required to move a vessel through the water. Depending on specific hull design configuration, energy reduction, and, therefore, fuel consumption is diminished by up to 29%.
On sailing vessels this drastically lowered drag is felt most keenly in light airs, when speed through the water increases by approximately 10% and is limited only by hull design speed. Likewise, for motor vessels, engines will propel a ship approximately 10 % faster for any given RPM compared to the same hull without SeaShell. Nothing else in the world can compare with these results.
Naturally, reduction of fuel burned results in an equivalent decrease in the carbon footprint of a SeaShell-protected vessel. Obviously, this is great for our Ozone Layer! So, SeaShell cleans up the air, as well as the water, while affording owners much improved fuel efficiency. Won't you be the coolest kid on the dock? Well, the truth is, you'll be even cooler, and the envy of other mariners in every dock, when you tell them that SeaShell pays for itself in as little as 3.5 years for private yachts and can do so in only a few trips for large ships!
How does it pay for itself, I hear you say? Calculating time to fully repay an owner in savings courtesy of SeaShell, is based on these factors:
- cost of fuel saved per distance traveled. As an example, if a pleasure craft is used 100 hours in a year at a fuel burn rate of 15 gallons an hour at $5.00 per gallon of diesel or gasoline, the annual fuel cost would be about $7500. In this example a new SeaShell hull coating may save this owner up to around $2200 annually on fuel cost alone. Heavier use, not to mention rising fuel prices, will result in greater savings with SeaShell.
- avoided costs of repeated haul-outs. For example, in Marina Del Rey, California most boats get hauled for bottom repainting every 2 years or so. Some people wait longer; some owners haul annually. For a 40 foot boat, each haulout costs at least $1000, if not more, when all the various charges from the boatyard are added up. Usually, the figure is considerably higher and dependant on boat size.
- avoided bottom cleaning costs. In most harbors divers cost around $50 to $100 per hour, again depending on boat size and how fouled a hull has become. With SeaShell, all that a diver must do once a month or so, and only for boats sitting still, is to wipe down the hull with a sponge.
- avoided repeat bottom painting every 2 years or so (This could be as often as once a year in warm waters.) See our Ten Year Guarantee.
- cost of vessel time out of service for all the above. Clearly, this applies primarily to commercial vessels, but lost down-time can be extremely costly for owners of such vessels.
Well, on top of the dramatic savings you'll get on your fuel bill, SeaShell is so strong and robust that, barring any collision damage, we will guarantee it will endure for AT LEAST 10 years as an effective biofouling deterrent. Impressive, huh? Yes, you read it right, 10 YEARS! Well, how about this: Our tests are suggesting that SeaShell may last into its 20th and even 30th year!
